Methane Risk Reduction & Site Stabilisation
Disused coal and anthracite mines can release methane, a greenhouse gas with a significantly higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide (CO₂). By stabilising and reprocessing legacy mine fines and tailings, MAT helps reduce disturbance of legacy materials and supports a more stable site environment, lowering the potential for uncontrolled emissions.
While MAT does not directly capture methane, it can help create site conditions that support future methane monitoring, management or independent capture systems where appropriate.
